Mason jars. These days, it seems like everywhere you look someone is doing something fun and creative with the good ol’ standard Ball jar.

Here’s a little history behind the mason jar… just in case you were curious!

They were invented in 1858 by Philadelphia tinsmith John Landis Mason, the mason jar has long been a staple in households throughout the nation. One of the best parts about these handy glass containers is how easy they are to find, and the variety of shapes and sizes they come in. Next time you’re at your local Target, Michaels, or even on Amazon, take a look at the countless different options you have when it comes to mason jars. Once you have an idea of what sizes they come in, you can better plan your craft day!

I love coming up with new and exciting ways to decorate my home (both inside and out!), and with summer upon us, it’s the perfect time to discuss different uses for something as inherently simple as a mason jar. Some of these ideas you may be familiar with, others may provide you with an ‘aha’ moment. Either way, hope you walk away from this post with a smile on your face and the creative juices flowing! 🙂

    Terrarium in a Jar

One of my favorite uses for the mason jar is as a terrarium. This is a wonderful way to bring a little green life into your home, beyond the standard flower pot. You can get super creative with these little terrariums, too, adding everything from succulents and airplants to little figurines and other spots of color.

Bring rustic charm into your home by ditching the standard lotion bottle for a mason jar, instead. This is an incredibly simple DIY project that you can do in a matter of minutes. All you have to do is cut a hole in the lid of the jar and insert the lotion pump, add your favorite lotion, and you’re done!

    Matchbox

Store your matches for candle lighting and even camping in a small mason jar, and you can also light them using the lid by adding a piece of sandpaper. This is another favorite of ours, as it allows you to get rid of the unsightly matchbox and have convenient ‘strike anywhere’ matches with you wherever you are.

    Chalkboard Spice Jars

Chalkboard paint is all the rage these days, and for good reason. Together with a handful of smaller mason jars, you can organize your spices in a convenient and hip way. Simply paint the lids of the jars with chalkboard paint and you will have an easy-to-read label in no time.

As you can see, we love mason jars! If you have any other ideas for these handy, budget-friendly jars, feel free to share. Here’s to a wonderful weekend of crafting and finding inspiration for home decor in every corner.

    Happy crafting!
