I get asked at a bare minimum once a week how I came up with the name—The Summery Umbrella.
I’m confident often to admit (and realize as well) that it is a little unusual, a very random, and absolutely 100% screams MY name. Why? Mainly because I consider myself to be a little bit of an oddity.
If you ask either one of my parents they will tell you that I’ve always been like this, and I’ve always had to do things my very own way. In other words, it might take me a little bit longer to figure it out, but gosh darn it, I was going to do it with my own unique spin on it as well.
Hmm… I wonder where my mini-me (aka. Miss Ava Joy) gets it from?!
So, if you must know, coming up with my creative business name took a lot of work, but I loved every minute of it! I’m such a name freak-a-zoid, and I truly enjoyed scanning through countless pages on the Internet and random books around the house looking for truly unique phrases and adjectives.
I probably wrote down hundreds of my favorites. I wish I still had the paper to show you some of the options.
I’m quite positive that a few of them were borderline loopy!
Anyways, as the old merchant on Aladdin said… perhaps you would like to hear the tale?
How it came to be..
The Summery Umbrella name actually came about because it is a direct reflection of myself, and believe it or not, it’s kind of a deep personal and emotional connection that I don’t think I even grasped when it was originally created.
It’s definitely hard to talk about your emotions, and especially if you’re an introvert! Typically, I box them up, shove them in a corner, and pretend that they don’t even exist.
I would rather not think about them because they sometimes hurt. Past, present, and even future ones at times.
For the longest time I just ran from them…
However, when I decided to face the skeletons in my closet that’s when I was finally able to accept myself for who I truly am, and what I am capable of doing with my life.
It’s also about the same time I met my husband. I was finally confident enough to accept my flaws and find true love.
I no longer chastised myself for who I wasn’t, but rather focused on my strengths.
So, when I think of happy memories, laughter, yummy desserts, and carefree days… I remember the summers when I lived in Indiana, I reflect on the gorgeous days of my time in Tampa, and also the warmth of the sun on my face while thanking my lucky stars that I am alive and healthy.
What’s in a Creative Business Name?
For me, summery is a word of positive thinking, and leading a life that is full of can do’s instead cannot’s.
However, you can’t have the light without the dark, and for some reason the rain has always been a comforting sound and sight for me.
On the same hand though, the rain can be dreary and just plain ol’ wet and yucky–you know, to be technical and all. ;)
The umbrella, in mind at least, is kind of a way to “fix” the rain. You can’t make it go away, but it’ll allow you to get to where you need to go even in the darkest and rainiest and negative of times.
And that my friends… is how I knew that The Summery Umbrella would be the perfect fit for my business.
It’s personal, it’s interesting, and heaven’s to Betsy I knew there was no way anybody else would have the same name ;)
A little deep… yes. But I think that’s why I’m able to stay so passionate and work as hard as I do for my business to work, and keep pushing forward to ensure that I do everything I can to ensure that it succeeds.
Now, if I haven’t scared you off yet, and YOU would like to come up with your own creative business name, or you’re currently in the process and struggling. Below you will find a great worksheet that I created to help you figure out what resonates with you and your business goals.
Don’t be scared to write down whatever pops into your head! You never know which words could lead you towards your “dream name”.
Enjoy and best of luck :)
I always enjoy hearing the story behind people’s business names, so this was a very delightful read. I love knowing how The Summery Umbrella was born. Thank you for sharing this :)
Hi Leah! I love names, and I have to admit that is so fascinating to see how everyone gets their own business (or children!) names. Thank you so much for stopping in :)
